While all three teams had some good top-end swims at the Northwood, San Clemente and Mission Viejo tri-meet, the Timberwolves' depth sealed the win in front of a home crowd on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at the Northwood High School Aquatic Center. The Timberwolves won 48 combined events beating the Tritons 220 - 119, and the Diablo's 225 - 115.
200 FREE
The first individual events of the late afternoon started off with the Northwood Timberwolves Open Girls Wen-Whei Chen putting up a top seed and wins in 2:27.91. JV Madeline Smith and Rochelle Child went 1-2 (2:24.87) and (2:26.66) over San Clemente's Kacie Faris (2:29.60). Northwood's JV Boys freshman Daniel Bae took second (2:06.73) just ahead of teammate sophomore Joseph Shaw who rounded out 3rd in 2:08.80. Varsity Zoe Baick, took 2nd behind San Clemente's Lauren Amigleo (1:57.75). Varsity freshman Hunter Hitchens would touch second with a 1:44.88 in a very close wire-to-wire race with senior Josh Swart of the San Clemente Tritons who edged Hitchens for the win in 1:44.11.
100 IM
Northwood's Open Girls Yu Hsuan Chen displayed great depth, taking a convincing win in the event finishing 1:28.79 over Mission Viejo Erika Walker (1:44.01). Sophomore Sriteja Sadam won the Open Boys posting a 1:10.52 beating Nick Snow of the Mission Viejo Diablos (1:14.01).
200 IM
Darrel Choi, Kyle Charbonnet and Jonathan Phan won the accolades on the JV Boys side with an outstanding triple 1-2-3 wins in 2:14.91, 2:21.02 and 2:24.57. This would turn out to be 1 of the 3 triple wins for the meet by the JV Boys. Varsity Freshman Julia Gonik took control of the meet early on with a 2:14.70 victory in the 200 IM. Gonik finished 9.94 seconds ahead of Mission Viejo's Kailey Banayat (2:24.64). Timberwolves Freshman Jacquelin Chen (2:20.55) contributed to the effort for second. Varsity freshman Gabe Munoz and Mission Viejo Min Zhi Chua dueled for the boys 200 IM title. Chua, touched out Munoz, going 1:56.17 to 2:00.26.
50 Free
The Northwood Open Girls showed their strength this evening winning the top three spots in the 50 free. Sophomore Julianne Hopper grabbed the top spot over a fast field, and had an easier time getting to the wall with the fastest time in 31.99. Her teammates Jessica Serrano and Cindy Le finished behind for 34.01 and 34.56. In the Open Boys 50 Free, Luke Balding charged into the wall first touching at 26.85, holding off both teammate Jonathan Mah (27.15), and the outside smoke of San Clemente's Christian Davoodian (28.82). Junior JV Girl Sian Davis, once again swimming in an outer lane, used her outside position to get past the field in 28.27 for the win, finishing just ahead of San Clemente's Zoe Noreyko (30.46). Three Timerwolves JV Boys finished in a dead heat, with Ryan Lee taking first in 24.05. Peter Ko (24.29), and Alex Ra (24.75) came in just after Lee. Northwood's senior Judson Balding won the Varsity Boys 50 Free, posting a 22.74, not quite his previous high school lifetime-best of 22.07, but managed to beat San Clemente's Chase Hamming (22.87) for the title.
50 Fly
Northwood's Open Girls put up some big swims in the 50 fly, as they produced a triple 1-2-3 win for the Timberwolves. Daniela Garcia Llaguno took the event by 6.2 seconds ahead of the rest of the competition. Teammate Sidney Yang finished second in a time of 46.15, and Amina Tawfik rounded third (47.73).
100 Fly
The JV Lady Timberwolves represented by Monroe Erie (1:21.65), Emy Engineer (1:21.89), and Esther Ha swam a similar 1-2-3 triple in the 100 fly earning points for Northwood. Coming out of the diving break, Esteban Torres dueled with San Clemente's Gregory Fakinos (1:02.37), but at the half way point lost ground on the second half finish yet still turned in second at 1:03.35. Varsity Girls Josephine Manuel led the way for the Lady Timberwolves with a win of her own in the 100 fly (1:01.16), over San Clemente's Lauren Amigleo who clocked in for second place at 1:01.68. Senior T-Wolves William Monjay claimed the title in the 100 fly that faced off against San Clemente's Quinn Birtles (53.32) in a tight battle. Monjay got out to a 24.96 start and put down his head on the final length to power home with a time of 53.30 for the win.
100 Free
Open Girls Sophomore Seren Smith reached in for the wall to win her second individual race of the meet, with her time of 1:15.13. Her teammate, freshman Amina Tawfik, finished second with a 1:19.14. Timberwolves freshman David Chang left his mark on the meet; winning the Open 100 free in 1:01.98. Sophomore Sanghoon Oh (1:03.10) out-touched San Clemente's Christian Davoodian (1:04.18) to take the second spot in the event. JV Girls Katherine Wang clocked a 1:01.35 to earn the 100 free win, with teammate Sam Ibasitas just edging out San Clemente's Kacie Faris, 1:07.52 to 1:07.53. JV freshman Daniel Bae led a 1-2 Northwood sweep of the 100 free with his winning time of 52.40; teammate freshman Justin Pyne was just behind in 56.24. Lady Timberwolves senior Alyssa Tong (57.26) got the job done in finishing second place by holding off Mission Viejo's Anna Kubo (57.91). Senior Cameron Hsieh would put the finishing touch on the Varsity 100 free by winning in 48.58, and was followed by freshman Gabe Munoz (50.29) for a 1-2 win for the Timberwolves.
500 Free
While the score had widen for Northwood at this point of the meet against both teams, Lady Timberwolves JV Ashley Lee (6:12.99) and Rochelle Child (6:45.84) clawed their way to another 1-2 victory outlasting San Clemente's Zoe Noreyko (6:57.16). Also winning the JV 500 free on the boys side was Northwood's Kyle Pendleton in 5:16.67, that swim was seven seconds from his best time this season. Teammate Joseph Shaw took second place in 5:35.57, over San Clemente's Camden Kos (5:40.36) rounding out third. Timberwolves freshman Hunter Hitchens took on yet another senior with San Clemente's Quinn Birtles. The two had very similar splits throughout the race, but Birtles just touched ahead at the wall by .04 four one hundredths of a second in 4:44.60 to 4:44.64.
50 Back
Northwood's Open Girls sprinters kept the streak of tight races running, with Cindy Le touching out teammate Jessica Serrano for the 50 back title 40.46 to 40.60. Mission Viejo's Madison Karns claimed third in 45.94. In the Open Boys 50 back, Max Tsao took home the title in 33.38, a time that now tops his best so far this season. Teammate Brian Fu touched second in 34.20 for a Timberwolves 1-2 win, and Mission Viejo's Steven Calcaterra took third in 36.38.
100 Back
The Timberwolves JV Girls produced a 1-2-3 triple, and set the pace early with Shannon Lee taking the win in cruising first touch with a 1:09.65. She beat out compatriot Kiana Allen, who took second in 1:11.91 and Ashley Lee claiming third in 1:13.44. On the boy's side JV Kyle Pendleton charted a time of 1:04.99 for the win, while teammate Adam Do and San Clemente's X. Ortiz placed second and third with times of 1:08.09 and 1:09.54.
50 Breast
For the first breaststroke event, the Open Girls 50, first place went to Emy Kory who won by over three seconds with a time of 40.86. Second went to Mission Viejo's Haley Christian with a time of 44.38. In the Open Boys competition, the Timberwolves made a strong opening statement, as Yiming Sun (33.23), Leon Shi (34.32), and Kavi Mathur (35.13) sped to a fast triple 1-2-3 win for Northwood.
100 Breast
Northwood JV Girls put in a 1-2-3 of their own with an impressive sweep of the 100 breaststroke. Katherine Wang (1:19.90) doubled up from her other first place finish in the 100 free. Teammates Hana Roushdy (1:23.57) and Hanna Kim (1:26.09) joining Wang on the triple win. A close race between Kyle Charbonnet (1:05.65) and teammate Kevin Chen (1:06.10) ended with Charbonnet breaking away at the turn for the JV Boys 100 breast win.
